Our Constant Companions

Every summer we wonder why God created mosquitoes. Seeing that everything he created was originally good, they must have had some grand purpose. Now the only purpose they seem to have is to cause us to cry out to their Creator for mercy!
During the two weeks of camp the mosquitoes were our constant companions. When there was no rain they were everywhere. When there was rain (which was often, unfortunately) they congregated in the places the rain wasn’t – which just so happened to be the places the campers congregated as well.

At night they were even worse. Thankfully, before we left, Jason had found a battery operated repellent thingy. It was such a blessing. Sadly though, one night a lone mosquito found it’s way into our tent before we turn on the death gas expeller. How much damage can one little mosquito do, you wonder? Mercy found out.

Thanks to her footed jammies, only her little hands and face were available for dinner, but that bug sure did have a meal. The next morning when we awoke her poor little face was covered in bites. Rachel actually counted them and there were over 40. It was a very sad sight and unfortunately there was nothing we could do for her.
After that episode our pastor gave us his repellent lotion, which we were able to put on little faces. Praise God for chemicals!

Poor little thing! Micah and I got some bug bites this summer too, but no more than 7-9 at a time - not 40! Hope she's healing up and not feeling too itchy.
